The best luxury mince pie

I’m not entirely sure if Waitrose No1 luxury range is their upper-end flagship brand, in competition with Duchy Organics, a mid-priced tier, or an alternative to their ‘Essentials’ range, but everything about these mince pies is sensational.

Waitrose has a reputation as being a bit of a posh supermarket, but with their price match, myWaitrose card which offers 25% off a wide range of products, and available online through their own site or Ocado, it’s actually very accessible and the slightly higher price makes way for great customer service and food quality.

These mince pies are no exception, and aside from not being quite able to tell where in the range they stand, these really are fantastic. Let’s break down what makes them so good…

1. Mincemeat

The perfect amount of moistness is a phrase that feels very uncomfortable coming out of one’s mouth, or the fingertips, but these No.1 mince pies manage just that. A feat that very rarely occurs. It’s boozy and bursting with fruity flavours that aren’t dulled by overcooking or hefty preservatives.

Waitrose has managed to make the filling here taste hearty but fresh at the same time, as though they were made in your Grandmother’s kitchen yesterday.

There does seem to be a throughline here between the Waitrose mince pies, in that although they get better with the price, they are all somewhat similar in ways other supermarket lines just aren’t.

2. Pastry

Dense but not too wet, the buttery pastry isn’t claggy and doesn’t stick to the roof of your mouth (ahem, Tesco). It’s significantly better than the cheaper Waitrose Essentials Mince Pies, and is actually one of the better pastries we’ve tried in our mincemeat journey thus far!

3. Taste

Sensational. Everything comes together to give a perfect classic mince pie that’s elegant and sophisticated enough both the kids and your hipster aunt will be happy with. The juicy, boozy, filling combined with the shaggy buttery case, it all just works so well together.

The one thing we’re a little disappointed with is the presentation which is a little lacklustre. A fine dusting of icing sugar would have gone a long way, but the box makes up for it. Gold print, great font choices across the board, all make it look like a premium product.
